How Much Firewood Do I Need?

When purchasing firewood, it is important to consider both the amount of space you have to store it and the heating purpose of your wood.

A cord of firewood is the standard measurement of firewood and is equal to 128 cubic feet of stacked wood. This is equivalent to a stack of wood that is 4 feet wide, 4 feet tall, and 8 feet long.

Depending on the size of your home, fireplace or wood stove and if you plan on using firewood as your main heating source you may need to purchase more than one cord a season. For most of our Idaho firewood customers, ordering a half cord or even a quarter cord on is plenty and you can always order more wood.

It is also important to consider the type of wood you are purchasing. Hardwoods such as oak, elm, locust and maple burn hotter and longer than softwoods such as pine and poplar. However, softwoods are great for having the occasional fire when you have people over, date night or backyard fire pits.
